Alejandro Robaina: What is your favorite Cuban food recipe?

Claire Boobbyer: My favourite Cuban recipe is actually ropa vieja (which translates as ‘old clothes’) and is shredded stewed beef in tomato sauce. Not everybody cooks it well in Cuba but I’ve tasted delicious and succulent ropa vieja in restaurants and in private homes.

The day of the opening of La Casa restaurant on August 3rd, 1995, was the last peaceful day at the Robainas. It was the beginning of private initiative in Cuba, and uncertainty marked the future of the new entrepreneurs who launched into adventure in a country in the midst of a crisis, ruled by a government which was traditionally reluctant to any enterprise outside the state frontiers.

In Nuevo Vedado, La Casa (Calle 30 #865, e/ 26 y 41, tel. 07/881-7000; daily noon– midnight) is worth the drive. This 1950s modernist house still has its original modish decor and is lush with tropical plantings. An indoor-outdoor patio features waterfalls and pools full of drowsy terrapins. La Casa serves such delicious dishes as octopus and onions (CUC9), fresh prawns sautéed in butter with garlic (CUC10), and caramel flan (CUC1.20). Matt Dillon and the Kennedys are among the famous clientele.

I smoked my first habano a few years ago, and it was really a very special gift. As incredible as it may looks, despite I was born in a place where smoking puros is something usual, my first one came from a foreigner: James Suckling.

James Suckling, currently European editor for Cigar Aficionado, and a conspicuous Cuban enthusiast, is a person who has dedicated time and efforts to get to know our country from the inside. His articles about Cuban reality are read by thousands of people when coming to Cuba, and once here, they follow recommendations made by James. He’s visited the Island several times to write about Cuban restaurants, and more than once, he’s recommended La Casa restaurant. Every time we dine together the conversation has the habano air, and that’s something you can’t deny when talking with a complete connoisseur of wines and tobaccos.

Jimmy Page’s visit to Havana was breaking news and it spread through the web instantly. The guitar player and composer of the legendary band Led Zeppelin, gathered with Cuban musicians at Saratoga’s lobby, the hotel where he was staying. That was, pretty much, what was issued from Page’s visit. Yet less known was the presence of the Hollywood star, Clive Owen, who also visited Cuba these days. Good luck and a close friend worked together to make Page and Owen to coincide at La Casa restaurant during a remarkable dinner.
